Consultation on strengthening the European defense industry EDIS

The European Commission has launched a consultation on a new European Defense Industrial Strategy (EDIS).

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the state of the Union in 2023. According to the Commission, with the EDIS, the EU needs to move towards increased defense preparedness. This is key to the development and commercialization of a wide range of technologies, from AI and sensors to safety-critical software and systems.

The EDIS consultation involves the European Parliament, the defense industry, the financial community and all other stakeholders. The comprehensive engagement process will continue over the next three months for the presentation of EDIS in early 2024.

Key issues will be demand coordination, strengthening supply chains, increasing innovation and supporting competitiveness.

"Improving Europe's defense readiness and the availability of military equipment has become vital to our collective security. We must continue to support the European defense industry to adapt to new security realities and produce more and faster. Today we are launching a formal consultation with States, the European Parliament and industry on a European Defense Industry Strategy to achieve this goal," said Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market.
