How to add a gear indicator to your car

Vaclav Krejci shows how to create a simple gear indicator for a manual transmission using an Arduino UNO Rev3 with a 128x64 SSD1306 OLED display and four Hall effect sensors.

Krejci's project does not require complex mechanical parts or any modifications to the vehicle. At the heart of the gear indicator are Hall-effect sensors. Four of them surround the gear lever. Hall-effect sensors detect field strength, which correlates with distance.

Krejci realized his project with a simple circuit board. Arduino Uno Rev3, the flagship board for developing projects to build simple automation and robotics systems based on the ATmega328 microcontroller, receives sensor signals via jumper wires. The small OLED display, which is also connected via jumper wires, can be mounted anywhere, for example in an empty DIN slot on the dashboard.

It's an affordable and useful installation that just about anyone can do.
