New 5Gbps Ethernet Switch Platform

Realtek has introduced a new 5Gbps Ethernet switch platform, a fast networking device that accelerates data transfer.

At the core of the platform is the RTL9303, an eight-port 10Gbps switch controller that was developed several years ago but has not been widely adopted due to the use of a third-party PHY chip.

The controller is based on a 34Kc MIPS processor and supports up to 1GB of DDR3 RAM. Combined with the Realtek RTL8251B PHY, the platform offers an affordable 5Gbps Ethernet switch for around $25 per port. Together with the Realtek RTL8126 PCIe 5Gbps network card, which costs about $30 USD, Ethernet 5Gbps is realized at an affordable price.

Ethernet 5Gbps is compatible with existing CAT 5e and CAT 6 cables, avoiding the need to replace old cables. Currently, Ethernet 10Gbps costs around US$80-90 per port, and switches typically cost at least US$45 per port.
